About

e-newspaperarchives.ch is the successor to Presse Suisse en ligne, which was created in 2011 by the Swiss National Library (NL) and the Valais Médiathèque, on the occasion of the launch of the digitized version of the Confedédéré.

This development was in response to a request from institutions wishing to digitize their newspapers: pooling resources and setting up a central presentation and access infrastructure for digitized Swiss press. Soon, additional cantonal partners integrated their collections into this platform: in 2012, St Gallen and Graubünden, followed in 2014 by Neuchâtel (La Chaux-de-Fonds), then in 2015 by Zug and Fribourg, Thurgau in 2016, Bern and Jura in 2019, Nidwald in 2020.

In 2017 the partners (and potential partners) of the platform made some important decisions for its future:

  • improve the quality of the collections presented by moving over time to a higher level of segmentation, that of the article,
  • offer the public the ability to correct poorly transcribed texts through automatic character recognition processes,
  • provide better opportunities for research and use of results ,
  • provide metadata that follow international standards (METS / ALTO) and that allow collaboration with the scientific world.
  • To implement these decisions, new software was selected and in 2018 the collections migrated to a new platform : e-newspaperarchives.ch

All the newspapers held in Swiss Press Online can be found on e-newspaperarchives.ch . They have been migrated without changing their segmentation level; an upgrade to article level segmentation is being planned for a later stage.

New collections are being integrated as they are being available and will be segmented at the article level. All titles added to the platform are processed according to the new standards, i.e. segmented at the article level.

What is not available on e-newspaperarchives.ch?

Newspapers digitized by institutions that have wished to develop their own search and presentation platform are not integrated into e-newspaperarchives.ch . You can find links to these titles or collections of titles by clicking on Other platforms.

The most recent issues of newspapers that still appear are available on their publisher's platform. You find the list with the links under the page Partners.
